10 Measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in households

Our lifestyle has a significant impact on the planet, which makes our decisions increasingly important. According to the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia, approximately 20,000 kilotons (kt) of CO₂-equivalent emissions are released into the air annually in Slovenia, with households accounting for 20% of this total.

By addressing all households, we aim to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Join us—at home, at the office, and everywhere in between. Small changes can lead to big results.

The United Nations has outlined 10 actions that individuals can adopt in their daily lives to help tackle the climate crisis.

1. Save energy at home.

Much of our electricity and heating still comes from fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas. Reduce energy consumption by lowering heating and cooling usage, installing LED bulbs and energy-efficient appliances, and washing laundry in cold water or air-drying instead of using a dryer.

2. Walk, cycle, and use public transport.

Roads are filled with petrol and diesel vehicles. Walking or cycling instead of driving reduces greenhouse gas emissions and benefits your health and fitness. For longer distances, consider taking the train, bus, or carpooling when possible.

3. Eat sustainably.

Consume more vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds, and reduce meat and dairy intake. Producing plant-based foods generally results in lower greenhouse gas emissions and uses less energy, land, and water.

4. Rethink air travel.

Airplanes consume large amounts of fossil fuels and generate high levels of greenhouse gas emissions. Reducing flights is one of the fastest ways to decrease your environmental impact. Opt for virtual meetings or travel by train when possible.

5. Avoid food waste.

Wasted food means wasted resources and energy used for production, packaging, and transport. Eat what you buy and compost any food scraps to reduce emissions from landfills.

6. Reduce, reuse, repair, recycle.

Electronics, clothes, and other goods emit carbon throughout their lifecycle—from raw material extraction to production and shipping. Buy fewer products, choose second-hand items, repair what you can, and recycle responsibly.

7. Switch to renewable energy.

Is your home still using heating oil, coal, or natural gas? Consider switching to renewable sources such as solar power. Installing solar panels enables you to generate your own electricity.

8. Drive electric.

Consider buying an electric vehicle. Although EVs may be powered by electricity from fossil fuels, they contribute significantly less to air pollution and emit much lower levels of greenhouse gases than petrol or diesel vehicles. The Eco Fund often offers subsidies for EV purchases and VAT deductions.

9. Choose eco-friendly products.

Spending habits shape the planet. Reduce your environmental impact by buying local and seasonal foods and products from companies that responsibly use resources and work to reduce emissions and waste.

10. Raise your voice.

Inform and encourage others to join the effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Talk to your neighbors, colleagues, friends, and family. Urge companies to take bold action. Call on local and global leaders to act. Collective effort is crucial in the fight against climate change.
