Decora - Smart Decoration and Functionalization of embsteklo
Description of the Project.
In order to strengthen the global market position through technologically breakthrough products and production processes, Steklarna Hrastnik, as the owner of the processes and business where the demonstration production line will be set up, joins partners (RC eNeM, Solvera Lynx, Grec), whose advanced products and services will be complement the pilot development and demonstration of an advanced packaging glass production line that meets the exposed needs of the new era:
1. Raising the added value of products by taking into account trends in digitization, personalization and greater transparency (goal: development of a new technological process for automatic application of functional materials on packaging glass and integration of electronic components into smart packaging labels).
2. Production of products in a sustainable way (goal: To reduce the environmental impact of materials used to make packaging)
3. Automation and digitization of processes taking into account modern standards for safety, health and comfort in the workplace – implementation of an advanced industrial environment that addresses the challenges of an aging workforce).
Demonstrating a new technological process for automatic application of functional materials on packaging glass, acquiring a completely innovative production line and realizing an advanced industrial environment by integrating the latest technologies, the consortium is the first in the wider region (and breakthrough in the world) to present processes, technologies and approaches. glass of the future.
In order to demonstrate the new technological process of packaging glass production – for the automatic application of functional materials in an advanced industrial environment – in addition to development activities, an investment in state-of-the-art hardware and its upgrade is also planned; whose value represents more than 50% of the total value of the project.
Project Objectives of the RRI Project |
|||
Within the scope of the operation, the following objectives will be achieved as stated in the application for the public tender |
|||
Goal 1 |
A new technological process for the automatic application of functional materials to packaging glass |
||
Current state (2018) |
Planned state (2022) |
Justification: With the aim of strengthening the global market position through technological breakthrough products, a new technological process will be developed for the automatic application of selected functional materials, enabling completely new possibilities in the production of packaging glass and advanced packaging. |

Goal 2 |
Reduce the environmental impact of materials used for packaging production |
||
Current state (2018) |
Planned state (2022) |
Justification: The goal is to replace some harmful and non-renewable substances in the coating (inks and functional materials applied to glass) and use coating formulations that contain a higher proportion of renewable materials (e.g., lignin produced through various separation processes) while still meeting or exceeding the basic required quality. |

Goal 3 |
Integration of electronic components into a smart label for packaging |
||
Current state (2018) |
Planned state (2022) |
Justification: The objective is to upgrade 3D and 3D EDGE labels into smart labels, utilizing the volume and surface area of the label to integrate various electronic components into what used to be a conventional self-adhesive decorative label and connect it with advanced packaging. Application of chips, sensors, electronic tags, printed batteries, speakers, and other advanced multi-component systems that can be interconnected on advanced packaging. The components embedded in the layers of the label also retain decorative functionality. |

Goal 4 |
Integration of high-tech solutions into the production line |
||
Current state (2018) |
Planned state (2022) |
Justification: The goal is to integrate the following high-tech solutions into the technological production line for decoration and application of functional materials on glass, in order to realize an advanced industrial environment:

Goal 5 |
Increase the annual volume of investment in R&D |
||
Current state (2017) |
Planned state (2022) |
Justification: One of the main expected results is an increased share of funds from companies for financing research and development activities. The companies that make up the DEKORA operation consortium have already demonstrated in the past that a large portion of their funds is dedicated to R&D. Together, these companies allocated €4,487,515.46 to investments and R&D in 2017, which represents 6.91% of net sales revenue. By the end of 2022, these funds, also due to projects like DEKORA, will increase cumulatively over three years by 10%, or €448,751.55. |
