    DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

    Project Objectives of the RDI Project
    Within the operation, the following objectives will be achieved, as set out in the public tender application

    Objective 1
    New technological process for automatic application of functional materials on packaging glass

    Justification: With the aim of strengthening the global market position through technologically breakthrough products, a new technological process will be developed for the automatic application of selected functional materials (FM), which will enable completely new possibilities in the production of packaging glass and the creation of advanced packaging.

    Reduce the environmental impact of materials used for packaging production

    Justification: The goal is to replace part of the harmful and non-renewable substances in the coating (paints and FM applied to glass) with coating formulations that will contain as high a share as possible of renewable substances (e.g. lignin produced with various separation processes), while still meeting or even exceeding the required quality standards.
    Objective 3
    Integration of electronic components into smart labels for packaging

    Justification: The goal is to upgrade 3D and 3D EDGE labels into smart labels: to use the volume and surface of the label for the integration of various electronic components into what has until now been a standard self-adhesive decorative label, and to connect it with advanced packaging. Application of chips, sensors, electronic tags, printed batteries, speakers and other advanced multi-component systems, which can be interconnected on advanced packaging. Components embedded in the layers of the label also retain a decorative function.

    Integrated high-tech solutions into the production line

    Justification: The goal is the integration of the following high-tech solutions into the technological production line for decorating and applying FM to glass in order to realize an advanced industrial environment:
    • Platform for energy and material efficiency and predictive maintenance with augmented reality;
    • Ensuring unique product identification in production;
    • Machine learning using artificial intelligence in the automatic application of FM and decorating;
    • System for actively ensuring safety and comfort in the workplace.
    The solutions relate to the “Share”, “Optimise”, “Virtualise” and especially “Exchange” directions of ReSOLVE3 and are key to the realization of a circular economy.
    Objective 5
    Increase annual investment volume in RDI

    Justification: One of the main expected results is an increased share of funds from companies for financing research and development activities. The companies forming the DEKORA project consortium have already shown in the past that they allocate a large share of funds to RDI. In 2017, these companies together invested €4,487,515.46 in RDI, representing 6.91% of net sales revenue. By the end of 2022, these funds will increase cumulatively over three years by 10%, or €448,751.55, also due to projects such as DEKORA.

    The public tender for the selection of operations is partly financed by the Republic of Slovenia and the European Union, namely from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The public tender for the selection of operations is carried out within the “Operational Program for the Implementation of European Cohesion Policy in the period 2014-2020”, priority axis: “International competitiveness of research, innovation and technological development in accordance with smart specialization for greater competitiveness and greening of the economy”; Priority investments: “Encouraging business investment in research and innovation and establishing links and synergies between companies, R&D centers and the higher education sector, in particular by encouraging investment in product and service development, technology transfer, social and eco-innovation, public service applications services, fostering demand, networking, clusters and open innovation through smart specialization and supporting technological and applied research, pilot lines, early product evaluation measures, advanced production facilities and first production, in particular in key enabling technologies and the dissemination of general purpose technologies “; specific objective: “Increased share of innovation-active companies”.
